A striking traditional ceremony among Ethiopia’s Hamar people has drawn attention for its unusual and physically demanding rituals, including a practice in which women voluntarily undergo whipping as part of a young man’s transition into adulthood.
Known as the Bull-Jumping Ceremony, the ritual is an important cultural event in Hamar society and traditionally marks a young man’s readiness to take on adult responsibilities, including marriage and family life.
One of the most striking parts of the ceremony involves young women and female relatives asking to be whipped by men participating in the ritual. The resulting scars are traditionally regarded as symbols of courage, loyalty and solidarity with the young man undergoing the initiation.
