Besigye Tells High Court He Was Forced to Appear in Treason Case

Proceedings in Dr. Kizza Besigye’s treason case took a dramatic turn on Monday after the veteran opposition politician told the High Court that he had been compelled to appear before the court against his will.

Addressing the presiding judge, Besigye argued that his court appearance was made under duress, adding another layer of controversy to a case that has attracted widespread public attention.

Besigye is facing treason charges alongside Hajji Obeid Lutale and other co-accused over allegations that they conspired to overthrow the Ugandan government. He has denied all the charges and maintains that the case against him has been handled in violation of his constitutional rights.

The former presidential candidate also renewed concerns about the events surrounding his arrest, repeating claims that he was unlawfully taken from Kenya and detained before being brought back to Uganda. Earlier efforts by the defence to halt the trial until those concerns were addressed were unsuccessful after the court ruled that the proceedings should continue.

Legal representation also became a point of discussion during the hearing, with Besigye insisting that he should be allowed to proceed with lawyers of his own choice before the trial advances further.

The High Court is expected to continue hearing the case in the coming sessions as both the prosecution and defence prepare for the next phase of the proceedings.
