Uwera Nsenga sat in her cell at Luzira Prison, her mind wandering back to the day that changed her life forever. She had been a vibrant 36-year-old, full of hope and dreams, when she was sentenced to 20 years behind bars. Now, as she counted down the days until her possible release in November 2026, she couldn’t help but think about the what-ifs.

What if she had made different choices? What if she had taken a different path? Would she be walking free, enjoying the sunshine and the company of loved ones? The questions swirled in her head like a never-ending storm.

Despite the weight of her sentence, Uwera had found ways to occupy her time. She had become a model prisoner, earning remissions for good behavior. She had taken up sewing and knitting, creating beautiful pieces that brought a sense of pride and purpose. She had also become a mentor to younger inmates, sharing her story and offering words of encouragement.

As she looked around her cell, Uwera’s eyes landed on a small calendar pinned to the wall. She counted down the months, weeks, and days until her possible release. It was a bittersweet feeling, a mix of excitement and trepidation. What would life be like outside these prison walls? Would she be able to rebuild her life, to find a sense of normalcy and happiness?

Uwera took a deep breath, letting the doubts wash over her. She knew that she had served her time, and that she deserved a second chance. She was ready to face whatever came next, to take on the challenges and opportunities that life had in store for her. As she lay down on her bunk, she smiled to herself, a glimmer of hope flickering in her heart. November 2026 couldn’t come soon enough.

The year is 2013. Jacqueline Uwera Nsenga returns to her home in Bugolobi, to a marriage which has been having major issues for the last 10 years or so. She’s about to murder her husband and spend the next 20 years of her life in prison.
