NRM Veterans Caution Opposition, Celebrate Progress Museveni Calls for Clarity on Medical Funds for Veterans

Veterans of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) have issued a stern warning to opposition political actors against any attempts at armed rebellion, vowing to defend the peace and stability ushered in by the NRM government.

Speaking on behalf of the Luwero Veterans Association during the 2025 National Heroes Day celebrations in Kaliiro Town Council, Lyantonde District, Kiggundu Kabandwa emphasized that the NRM’s liberation struggle laid the foundation for Uganda’s democratic progress. The association’s chairperson, Hajji Edirisa Sseddunga, reiterated that any political transition must occur through democratic and constitutional means.

“We cannot compromise Uganda’s peace by allowing ideologically disoriented groups to reverse the gains made through immense sacrifice,” the veterans declared.

The veterans also commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his steadfast leadership, particularly in maintaining national security and guiding the development of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), which they hailed as one of the most disciplined military forces in the region.

Highlighting the historical relevance of the Lyantonde–Kabula corridor in the NRM’s armed struggle, the veterans called for continued recognition of its strategic value in Uganda’s liberation history.

In her remarks, Minister for the Luwero Triangle, Alice Kaboyo, announced that over 300 income-generating projects are currently being supported under a government programme aimed at improving the livelihoods of veterans’ families. She also outlined the progress of an ongoing mass housing initiative for veterans, which aims to enhance their welfare and dignity.

During the event, President Museveni raised concerns about the UGX 218 billion reportedly allocated for veteran medical personnel. He questioned its status and called for a clear explanation regarding the management and disbursement of the funds meant to benefit veteran doctors. The President emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in handling resources designated for those who served the nation.

The 2025 National Heroes Day is being commemorated under the theme: “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration.”
