From Ill-Trained to Hardened: Barber Turned Passionate Bobi Wine Bodyguard Breaks Down

By Jako David Waluluka

Emotional Testimony: Bobi Wine’s Bodyguard Recounts Torture in Court. In a packed Masaka Chief Magistrates Court, Edward Ssebufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe, head of the National Unity Platform (NUP) inner security and chief bodyguard to NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), broke down while recounting the alleged torture he endured while in military custody.

Appearing before Magistrate Abdallah Kayizzi on Tuesday, Mutwe, visibly shaken and clad in a black T-shirt and pants, struggled to walk without aid. As he described the harsh treatment, he shook uncontrollably, massaging his bruised hands and fingers.

Mutwe revealed that he takes 12 painkillers daily, suffering from severe pain that has left him feeling like he’s dying. In a heart-wrenching plea, he begged for medical attention, even suggesting that his arms be amputated if it would allow him to receive treatment.

Mutwe, alongside co-accused Achileo Kivumbi, Gaddafi Mugumya, and Smart Wakabi, faces aggravated robbery charges related to a chaotic procession following the burial of former Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. The state alleges that the group used violence to rob a civilian of a mobile phone and cash in Masaka District.

After recounting his ordeal, Mutwe was committed to the High Court in Masaka and remanded at Murchison Bay prison in Luzira. He and his co-accused are set to reappear in court to apply for bail. The case has drawn attention to concerns about human rights and the treatment of detainees.
