The Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, recently met with U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, William Popp, at the Special Forces Headquarters in Entebbe on Wednesday. This meeting, which holds significant diplomatic weight, aimed to fortify the long-standing relationship between Uganda and the United States.
Gen. Muhoozi lauded the deep-rooted cooperation between the two nations and emphasized the importance of continuing this bilateral partnership. His comments come in the wake of tensions several months ago, when Muhoozi had threatened to expel Ambassador Popp from Uganda for allegedly undermining Uganda’s constitution. However, this meeting signals a renewed focus on maintaining and strengthening the relationship with Washington.
Ambassador Popp was accompanied by the U.S. Military Attaché to Uganda, Lt. Col. Christian Noumba. During the meeting, Gen. Muhoozi stressed the importance of preserving the enduring bond between the nations, stating, “Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962, Uganda and the United States have collaborated across a broad spectrum of areas—diplomatic, security, economic, health, and cultural.”
The CDF highlighted that the partnership has flourished due to mutual respect, collaboration, and shared values of peace and prosperity. He also noted the cultural and historical ties that bind the nations, mentioning, “The United States, with its Black population of over 40 million people, is a natural ally of Uganda and Africa.”
Furthermore, Gen. Muhoozi expressed gratitude for the U.S.’s support in Uganda’s development journey, acknowledging how both nations have benefited through cooperative efforts. “Together, we have achieved remarkable progress, and I am confident that our partnership will continue to grow stronger in the years to come,” he added.
Ambassador Popp, for his part, commended Uganda’s leadership role in Somalia, where the Ugandan People’s Defense Force (UPDF) is actively engaged in combating terrorism. He also praised Uganda’s open refugee policy, which has provided sanctuary to thousands fleeing conflict.
Ambassador Popp reaffirmed his optimism for the continued flourishing of the partnership, stating, “Let us seize this moment to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and the well-being of our people, ensuring that our partnership continues to thrive for generations to come.”
The meeting between Gen. Muhoozi and Ambassador Popp underscores the resilience and adaptability of the Uganda-U.S. relationship, setting the stage for a stronger, more collaborative future.
