Meet Franco, A legendary Congolese Singer Who Greatly Influenced Dr. Jose Chameleon

François Luambo Luanzo Makiadi, commonly known as Franco Luambo, was a renowned Congolese singer, guitarist, songwriter, bandleader, and cultural revolutionary. Born on July 6, 1938, Franco was a central figure in 20th-century Congolese and African music, leading the influential band TPOK Jazz for over 30 years. He was celebrated for his mastery of African rumba, earning nicknames such as “Sorcerer of the Guitar” and “Grand Maître of Zairean Music.” Franco’s music addressed various themes, including love, relationships, politics, and social commentary.

He was ranked 71st on Rolling Stone’s list of the 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2023. Throughout his career, Franco collaborated with notable musicians, released hit songs like “Mario,” and was recognized as one of the 50 African icons by the BBC. He passed away on October 12, 1989.

Franco Luambo maintained a strong alliance with President Mobutu, who provided him with financial backing for his music. Due to the prevailing insecurity in his native Congo, Luambo opted to reside in Belgium, returning to his homeland only for select, high-profile concerts.
