Kizza Besigye, a renowned Ugandan physician, politician, and former military officer, has indeed had a remarkable career trajectory. Initially, he served as President Yoweri Museveni’s personal doctor, but later became a prominent opposition leader, fearlessly criticizing Museveni’s regime and even referring to him as a “dictator”.
Besigye’s presidential ambitions have been evident, as he contested against Museveni in four consecutive elections (2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016), unfortunately losing each time. Despite his initial promise not to run again in 2013 and 2014, he changed his mind in 2015.
Throughout his campaigns, Besigye has faced numerous challenges, including arrests, intimidation, and violence. In 2016, his campaign rallies were marked by unique donations from supporters, such as bunches of bananas and live goats.
Besigye’s criticism of the electoral process and Museveni’s regime has been unwavering. He has accused the government of rigging elections, intimidating opponents, and suppressing dissenting voices. His own experiences, including being shot, pepper-sprayed, and arrested multiple times, have only strengthened his resolve.
On a personal note, Besigye is married to Winnie Byanyima, a former MP and a close friend of Museveni’s in the past. The couple has one son, and Besigye was born in the western Rukungiri District. Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s imprisonment has sparked widespread concern, particularly with the 39th NRA/M liberation celebrations just around the corner. According to recent reports, Besigye was abducted in Nairobi and is currently being held at Luzira Maximum Security Prison in Kampala ¹. He’s facing charges of allegedly soliciting military support overseas to destabilize Uganda’s national security.
Besigye’s detention has raised red flags about human rights violations, with some lawmakers calling for an investigation into his treatment. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has tasked the Committee on Human Rights to look into Besigye’s detention conditions. The committee is expected to visit Luzira Prison and report back to Parliament by January 28, 2025.
This isn’t Besigye’s first run-in with the authorities. As a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni, he’s faced numerous arrests and detentions over the years. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, has been vocal about his detention, demanding his immediate release.
