TODAY IN HISTORY : SOUTH AFRICA FREEDOM DAY.

South Africa Every April 27 since 1994, South Africans observe “Freedom Day” in remembrance of the historic first democratic election that took place in their nation and signalled the official end of apartheid’s racial segregation and oppression so its a crucial day that holds great significance since it marks the end of 300 years of colonialism in their nation. Additionally, it signifies the end of white minority rule .

This Saturday marks the 30th anniversary of that historic vote, in which millions of Black South Africans, young and old, exercised a basic right that a white minority government had denied them: the ability to choose their own destiny.

It was the first election in which voters above the age of eighteen from any race could cast a ballot, and about 20 million votes were counted. This includes people who were foreign nationals living in South Africa on a permanent basis. The actual voting was spread out across four days to ensure that everyone could participate. Hour-long lines of people awaited their turn to speak, With 62% of the vote, Nelson Mandela’s party, the African National Congress, easily won.

Nine days later, the anti-apartheid movement’s leader, Nelson Mandela, was freed free from prison after winning the election to begin his journey of becoming the country’s first Black leader.

The ANC is still predicted to be the largest party and will probably need to form convoluted coalitions with smaller parties in order to stay in power.

The elusive freedom and prosperity that Nelson Mandela spoke about in 1994 are deeply ingrained in South Africans’ memories. However, most of them now seem willing to look past the ANC to achieve it.

SHOUT OUT TO ALL SOUTH AFRICANS , CONGS.
