FMD REMAIN HAVOC: Animal Quarantine In The City.

The ministry of agriculture, animal industries and fisheries have added their voices on the prohibition of live stock movement in Kampala.

The Government has announced the ban on trade of meat in Kampala as a way of controlling the deadly disease. This comes after the ministry of agriculture, animal industries and fisheries issued an immediate quarantine on live stock in Kampala city after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Lubaga division late last month.

The foot and mouth disease is a severe highly contagious viral disease that causes blister on animal’s feet and mouth.

This can be transmitted to humans through direct or indirect physical contact.

The movement of goats, cattle, sheep, pigs and their products from, to, through and with in Kampala city are prohibited until further notice.

Eating meat from an infected animal can lead to infection that may cause death to young children and severe symptoms to the elder people.

This ban will mainly affect the market of cattle products both inside the country and outside the country since almost the entire country is now in lockdown.

In October last year, FMD broke out in 36 districts mainly in the cattle corridor.

The mass vaccination of animals ordered by the government is under way but faces challenges like what the ministry of Agriculture says that the vaccines are likely to be fake.

In February, the cabinet had agreed on the importation of 10 million doses of FMD vaccine.

FMD is adversely impacting farmers and consumers as the Government restrictions are still on going and this is affecting the supply and it is also disrupting the cattle business, leading to economic difficulties and closure of businesses.
