Unveiling Olubugo: Uganda’s Ancient Barkcloth Tradition

Olubugo, one of the oldest textiles in history, originated among the Ngonge clan of the Buganda kingdom. The chief craftsman, Kaboggoza, played a pivotal role in perfecting this traditional craft, creating bark clothes for royal Baganda families and community members.

Ancient Techniques

The manufacturing process of Olubugo is distinct and prehistoric, predating the invention of weaving. Here’s an overview:

1. Harvesting: Inner bark of the Mutuba tree is harvested during the rainy season.
2. Processing: Bark is beaten with wooden mallets to achieve an even terracotta color and soft texture.
3. Shed processing: Bark is processed in an open shed to prevent immediate drying.
4. Dyeing: Barkcloth for kings and chiefs is dyed black or white to signify status.

Cultural Significance

Olubugo is worn like a toga by both men and women. Women also wear a sash made from the same barkcloth around their waist. This traditional attire holds significant cultural value, reflecting the rich heritage of the Buganda kingdom.
