Recently, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) released a document listing all land titles in wetlands across Uganda. This document shows that many areas, especially in Kampala and Wakiso districts, are in wetlands. These areas are home to many people living in ghettos or slum areas.
A big question many people have is why the Stabex headquarters were left out while other places were demolished.
According to TV10 Gano Mazima, Dean Lubowa Saava says” Stabex’s petrol reserve got a special permit from NEMA.
This permit allows Stabex to operate in this wetland area because it is their main headquarters in Uganda. They needed a place surrounded by water and where there is no many settlements , but people were already living there when they moved in.
Now the concern is about safety. If something goes wrong, like a fire or explosion, it could be very dangerous because the area is crowded. So to prevent this, NEMA had to move people away and create a safe space around the petrol reserve. This helps protect lives and makes sure that if something happens, the impact is less severe.
Imagine what could happen if an accident happen in such a crowded area. NEMA’s actions aim to prevent such dangers by ensuring there is enough space between the petrol reserve and the residents.
