In a dramatic twist in the high-profile corruption investigation involving former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among, President Yoweri Museveni personally intervened to prevent her detention, citing serious health concerns.
TV10ganoMazima can exclusively report that a few weeks ago, a high-powered team of criminal investigators, led by Maj. Dr. Tom Magambo, Director of the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), inspected the VIP rooms at Kira Division Police Station.
The visit was in preparation for Among’s possible detention after she recorded a statement at Kibuli CID headquarters. However, sharp divisions emerged within the investigative team. A section of detectives strongly protested the plan to detain her, arguing that she appeared visibly ill and frail. “Please, Uganda has big land — when she dies, we shall bury her.
What I want is to see her detained,” one senior detective reportedly vowed during a heated internal meeting, according to highly placed sources. As arrangements for detention were underway, Among used her high-level contacts to reach President Museveni directly. She pleaded to be allowed to proceed to Mulago National Referral Hospital to see her personal doctors, claiming her blood pressure had spiked dangerously.
Sources close to the matter say President Museveni was not surprised by the request. He was already aware of Among’s delicate health condition — including a mysterious illness that had prompted her earlier travel to Italy not just to meet the Pope, but also to seek specialized medical treatment. The President immediately instructed Maj. Dr. Magambo and the detectives to halt the detention plans and allow her access to hospital care.Behind-the-Scenes Negotiations David Kabanda, the Member of Parliament for Kasambya County, also claimed he played a key role by negotiating her hospital visit after consulting Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who was overseeing aspects of the operation against Among.
Two weeks ago, Museveni held a private meeting with Among at Nakasero State Lodge. Sources say she went there to plead for pardon, insisting that the luxurious cars, clothes, watches, and other high-value items recovered from her homes were bought with her own legitimate money from successful businesses, including schools.
During the emotional meeting, Among also informed the President that she urgently needed to travel abroad for further medication, saying the stress from the ongoing investigations had put her life at risk.According to insiders, Museveni urged her to calm down and avoid unnecessary stress.
He promised to be the first to personally inform her of any further developments regarding the investigations. However, he made it clear that the matter was largely beyond his personal control.“The sanctioned investigations against you are above me,” Museveni reportedly told her, “because the alleged stolen money is not my personal money — it belongs to Ugandans.
”Current Status The Inspector General of Government (IGG), who is leading the criminal investigations, has not yet concluded her probe. Her final report is expected to guide the President’s next course of action on the matter. For now, Annet Anita Among remains under house arrest at her Nakasero residence, which is under heavy surveillance.
Top security commanders coordinating the investigations are closely monitoring her movements and all visitors to her home. Among faces serious accusations of abuse of office during her tenure as Speaker of Parliament (2022–2026), including the alleged theft of billions of shillings meant for parliamentary operations.
She is also linked to other grave criminal activities. This delicate balancing act between accountability for public funds and compassion for health concerns has once again highlighted the complex intersection of politics, power, and presidential discretion in Uganda’s most sensitive investigations. The nation now awaits the IGG’s final report to see how this high-stakes drama will unfold.
