Ssemujju Nganda Reveals Why Opposition Leaders Visit Besigye in Prison
Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has revealed that one of the reasons why opposition leaders frequently visit Dr. Kizza Besigye at Luzira prison, where he is detained on treason charges, is to seek guidance on how to unite opposition political parties ahead of the 2026 elections.
Ssemujju confirmed that Besigye was instrumental in brokering a political agreement between his People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and Gen. Mugisha Muntu’s Alliance for National Transition (ANT). He added that talks with other parties, including the National Unity Platform (NUP), are ongoing.
NUP’s Kivumbi Skeptical About Joining Opposition Coalition
However, NUP’s deputy president, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has expressed reservations about joining the opposition coalition. Kivumbi claimed that some opposition leaders have received funding from President Museveni to undermine their party and its presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine).
He challenged the Democratic Front (DF) to provide evidence of the Shs600m they claimed to have used for their national delegates’ conference in Masaka City.
Allegations of Opposition Leaders Receiving Museveni’s Money
Kivumbi’s allegations come on the heels of claims that some opposition leaders have received billions of shillings from Museveni to fight Bobi Wine. Vincent Mayanja, a DP block coordinator, previously alleged that DF leaders Samuel Lubega Mukaku and Michael Mabike received money from Museveni to fight Bobi Wine and used it to buy properties.
Bobi Wine’s UPC Talks
Meanwhile, TV10 Gano Mazima has established that Bobi Wine is trying to convince his party leaders to sign a cooperation agreement with the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) to work together during the 2026 elections.
Sources claim that the agreement would help NUP pull numbers from Northern Uganda, particularly Lango, where UPC is popular.
Opposition Politicians Buying Dormant Parties
Highly placed sources have confirmed that several opposition politicians are fighting to access Museveni’s alleged funding and are buying dormant political parties to use them as vehicles.
The development comes as former Kawempe South legislator Mubrak Munyagwa and Kampala central legislator Muhammad Nsereko have declared their intentions to launch their political parties.
Succession Battle Speculations
Sources speculate that opposition politicians are buying parties to use them in the succession battle, anticipating Museveni’s potential retirement in 2031.
