Yondo Sister: The Queen of Soukouss
Yondo Kusala Denise, popularly known as Yondo Sister, was born on January 1, 1958, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Belgian Congo). Her music career spans over four decades, with a remarkable journey that has earned her the title “Le reine de la Soukouss” (The Queen of Soukouss).
Early Life and Career
Yondo Sister’s entry into the music industry began as a dancer with the renowned Congolese band Zaiko Langa Langa. She later joined Tabu Ley’s band, L’Afrisa International, in the 1970s, alongside her sister Yondo Nyota Chantal. The sisters were known as the Yondo Sisters.
Rise to Fame
Mentored by Rachid King, Yondo Sister transitioned to singing as a backup artist in Lafrisa International. Her talent and charisma soon propelled her to the forefront, and in 1989, she joined Soukouss Stars. Her powerful voice, energetic stage presence, and unique style earned her the admiration of fans and critics alike.
Solo Career
Yondo Sister pursued a solo career, releasing her debut album “Bazo” in 1991. This was followed by a string of successful albums, including Agenda, FBI, Deviation, Planete, and Derniere minute. Her music blended traditional Congolese rhythms with modern styles, captivating audiences worldwide.
