Speaker of Parliament Anita Among adjourned the parliament after directing the government to present a statement explaining the circumstances surrounding Dr. Kizza Besigye’s arrest.
This move comes amid growing criticism of the government’s handling of Besigye’s arrest, with many labeling it an abduction.
Among’s directive is seen as a response to mounting pressure from opposition and civil society organizations demanding answers about the arrest.
The government faces accusations of violating Besigye’s rights and ignoring due process. Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, has defended the government’s actions, stating that Besigye will face trial in a civilian court as directed by the court martial.
However, this hasn’t alleviated concerns about the government’s motives and the legality of Besigye’s arrest. The debate in Parliament is expected to be heated, with opposition MPs likely to grill the government over its handling of the Besigye
