Besigye, Lutale Arraigned in Nakawa Court Amid Tight Security

Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obed Lutale have been brought to Nakawa court amid tight security. This development comes after they were charged with treason and remanded to Luzira Prison until March 7, 2025.

The duo’s journey to this point began when they were arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, and later charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Dr. Besigye, a veteran opposition politician, and his co-accused, Lutale, denied the charges, with Besigye refusing to be tried in a military court, citing his civilian status.

Their case took a turn when the Supreme Court ruled that the General Court Martial had no jurisdiction to try civilians, leading to the transfer of their case to the civilian court. However, the High Court later dismissed an application seeking their release, ruling that their detention remained lawful.

As of now, Dr. Besigye and Lutale are facing treason charges, with an alternative count of misprision of treason. Their case has sparked significant interest and concern, with many monitoring the developments closely.
