Former Parliament Speaker Rt. Hon. Anita Among has reportedly been cleared by police in an inquiry involving allegations of illicit enrichment and abuse of office.
Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the development during the weekly security media briefing at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.
Rusoke said police had completed their part of the inquiry concerning Among, although he noted that some procedural steps remain before the matter can be considered fully concluded.
The police spokesperson did not provide details of the findings or explain the specific basis on which Among was cleared. He also indicated that the outstanding processes would have to be completed before the case reaches its final stage.
The inquiry had attracted public attention because of Among’s position as a senior political figure and her former role as Speaker of Parliament.
For now, the police position indicates that no further action has been announced against Among in relation to the allegations investigated by the force. The completion of the remaining procedures will determine the formal status of the matter.
Unless and until any contrary official finding is issued, the allegations against Among should be treated as allegations and not as established wrongdoing.
