Museveni Turns Down Wangadya’s Resignation, Asks Her to Stay on as UHRC Chair

President Yoweri Museveni has declined the resignation of Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Chairperson Mariam Wangadya, asking her to remain in office and continue leading the Commission.

Wangadya revealed the development on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE).

She told MPs that she had submitted her resignation letter directly to President Museveni. However, instead of accepting it, the President reportedly asked her to continue serving as chairperson and fulfil her responsibilities at the Commission.

The revelation comes at a time when the UHRC is facing increased scrutiny over its leadership and internal affairs.

Wangadya’s appearance before COSASE provided an opportunity for MPs to seek clarification on the circumstances surrounding her intended departure and the wider challenges facing the Commission.

By declining the resignation, Museveni has effectively kept Wangadya at the helm of the human rights body as it continues to deal with questions about its leadership, operations and accountability.

The UHRC is mandated to promote and protect human rights in Uganda, investigate alleged violations and ensure that government institutions respect fundamental rights and freedoms.

Wangadya’s decision to resign had therefore attracted attention, particularly given the important role the Commission plays in addressing human rights concerns across the country.

With the President asking her to remain in office, the focus will now shift to whether Wangadya can continue leading the Commission while addressing the concerns raised by Parliament and restoring confidence in the institution.
