Police Announce Traffic Plan for CHAN 2024 Matches in Uganda

Uganda is proudly co-hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 alongside Kenya and Tanzania, and all eyes will soon be on Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, where much of the action will unfold from August 2 to 29.

As teams and fans arrive from across Africa—including football powerhouses like South Africa, Algeria, Niger, and Guinea—the energy in the city will be high, but so will traffic.

To help everyone move safely and smoothly, the Uganda Police has released detailed traffic guidelines. Whether you’re planning to catch a match, drive through the city, or just want to avoid road chaos, here’s what you need to kn

Most matches will take place at Mandela National Stadium (Namboole), but teams will also train at several other grounds across Kampala:

Namboole Annex

Wankulukuku Stadium

KISU Grounds (Bukoto)

FUFA Grounds (Kadiba, Mengo)

Kyambogo University Playground

If you live near these venues, prepare for increased activity and heavier traffic, especially around training hours.

Teams flying in through Entebbe International Airport will be escorted to key hotels around Kampala. These are the planned routes:

To Speke Resort (Munyonyo): Expressway → Kajjansi → Munyonyo

To Mestil Hotel: Expressway → Northern Bypass → Yusuf Lule Rd → Mukwano Rd

To Serena Hotel: Expressway → Northern Bypass → Yusuf Lule Rd → UBC Roundabout

To Skyz Hotel (Naguru): Expressway → Northern Bypass → Kira Rd → Bukoto

To FUFA Hotel (Kisaasi): Expressway → Northern Bypass → Kisaasi Roundabout

If you travel these routes daily, expect some delays during convoy movement

Heading to Namboole Stadium or the training venues? Here’s how you’ll get there:

Some roads will be temporarily closed or redirected to ease congestion:

Bweyogerere: Traffic rerouted via Kinawataka Rd (near Jokas Hotel)

Kireka Trading Centre: Closed to vehicles from Hared Petrol Station

Planning alternative routes ahead of time will save you stress.

VIP Parking: Southern Wing of Namboole (only for accredited vehicles)

General Parking: As directed by Traffic Police

Heads-up: No vehicle without accreditation will be allowed near the stadium

The police will be out in full force to manage traffic and ensure security:

Escorts for all team convoys

Police presence at all venues and along main roads

Strict enforcement of traffic rules

Expect delays during key hours—especially around match kick-off and wrap-up times.

SP Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, urges everyone to:

Respect traffic officers’ instructions

Plan your travel in advance

Be patient and courteous on the road

Leave early if you’re attending a gam

Uganda is ready to welcome Africa to CHAN 2024—and while the matches will bring excitement, they’ll also bring traffic. With a little patience and planning, we can all enjoy the games and keep the city moving.
