Controversy Surrounds Judge Singiza’s Handling of Besigye’s Bail Denial

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has raised serious concerns about the conduct of High Court Judge Dr. Douglas Karekona Singiza in the case of Dr. Kizza Besigye’s bail denial. According to the ULS, Judge Singiza’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and human rights.

The ULS argues that Dr. Besigye’s detention is unlawful following a Supreme Court ruling that nullified the trial of civilians in military courts. Despite this, Judge Singiza denied Dr. Besigye bail, citing reasons that have been disputed by the ULS. The ULS claims that Judge Singiza’s actions are a clear example of judicial overreach and abuse of discretion.

The ULS also accuses Judge Singiza of delaying the hearing of Dr. Besigye’s habeas corpus petition, which is a constitutional right meant to determine the legality of one’s detention. This delay, according to the ULS, has resulted in Dr. Besigye’s continued unlawful detention.

The ULS’s allegations against Judge Singiza have significant human rights implications. The organization’s concerns highlight the need for judicial accountability and the protection of human rights in Uganda. The case has sparked a national conversation about the role of the judiciary in upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights.

The ULS is calling for immediate intervention from the Judiciary Leadership to review Judge Singiza’s conduct and take disciplinary action. The organization is also urging the international community to hold Uganda accountable for its human rights obligations and ensure justice is served.

The controversy surrounding Judge Singiza’s handling of Dr. Besigye’s bail denial has raised serious questions about the independence and impartiality of the judiciary in Uganda. The ULS’s allegations highlight the need for greater transparency and accountability in the judicial system. As the case continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the judiciary will respond to the ULS’s concerns and whether Dr. Besigye will receive justice.
