Kayiira Was Released Today 38 Years Ago, His Mysterious Death After Prison

Andrew Kayiira was a Ugandan politician and former government minister. He was arrested in October 1986 on allegations of plotting against the government of President Yoweri Museveni.

Kayiira’s arrest was part of a broader crackdown on perceived opponents of the Museveni regime. At the time, Uganda was still reeling from the aftermath of the Ugandan Bush War, which had brought Museveni to power in 1986.

Despite the initial charges, Kayiira was released on February 24, 1987, due to lack of evidence. However, his freedom was short-lived. He was rearrested and charged with treason, a capital offense in Uganda.

Tragically, Kayiira’s life was cut short. He was murdered on March 8, 1987, while in custody. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and it is still widely debated whether his killing was a state-sponsored assassination or the result of other factors.
