A devastating tragedy struck on Thursday when an Air India flight en route to London crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, located about 17 km from Gujarat’s capital, Gandhinagar.
The Boeing 787-8 aircraft was carrying 242 people, including 229 passengers and 13 crew members (two pilots and 11 cabin crew), when it went down in a densely populated area.
A senior police official confirmed that at least 110 people have died, with no current reports of survivors. The aircraft crashed into the building of a doctors’ hostel in the Meghani area, triggering a swift and large-scale emergency response.
According to Air India, the passengers included:
- 169 Indian nationals
- 53 British nationals
- 7 Portuguese nationals
- 1 Canadian national
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Air India, expressed the airline’s deep sorrow in a public statement:
“With profound sorrow, I confirm that Air India Flight 171 operating Ahmedabad–London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected.”
He also stated that an emergency center has been activated, with support teams set up for the families of passengers. Air India promised to share verified information as it becomes available.
Initial reports indicate that the aircraft had reached an altitude of about 825 feet before suddenly descending. Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion followed by plumes of smoke.
Local police and emergency agencies reached the site within minutes. Over two dozen ambulances were deployed for rescue and recovery operations. A green corridor was also created to ensure rapid transport of the injured to nearby hospitals.
Video footage aired on national television showed thick columns of smoke billowing from the crash site as rescue workers and emergency services scoured the debris.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and are clearing debris. The Indian aviation authority has initiated an investigation, and further updates are expected as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
