The leadership race within the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has taken a new turn after the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) announced its support for Denis Adim Enap as the party’s preferred presidential candidate.
PLU made the announcement during a press briefing, saying it had chosen to back Adim Enap as the person it believes can provide new direction for the historic opposition party. The civic movement, which is chaired by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has now entered the UPC leadership conversation at a time when the party is facing internal disagreements.
The endorsement comes amid a long-running dispute over the leadership of the UPC, with rival groups continuing to contest who has the legitimate authority to lead the party. The disagreement has mainly centred around the position held by Jimmy Akena, whose leadership has faced challenges both politically and legally.
The ongoing dispute has resulted in court battles and disagreements involving party officials and other stakeholders. Questions have also been raised over the eligibility of some individuals to represent the party in the 2026 presidential race.
