Former world boxing champion Zolani Tete has reportedly been shot dead outside his home in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, sending shockwaves across the boxing world.
Tete, 38, was reportedly attacked on Friday shortly after arriving at his residence in Mdantsane Township. According to police and South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, the former two-weight world champion was ambushed by armed attackers.
Reports indicate that two men wearing balaclavas stepped out of a vehicle and opened fire on Tete. A 27-year-old woman who was travelling with him was also shot several times and rushed to hospital for treatment.
Tete was a respected figure in the world of boxing, having won world titles in two different weight divisions during his professional career. His death has left the boxing fraternity and his supporters in mourning.
Police have since launched investigations into the deadly shooting, although the motive behind the attack remains unclear. No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
Authorities are expected to release more details as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the killing of the former boxing champion.
