NRM Primaries Kick Off Nationwide as Early Winners Emerge

Uganda’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), is today holding internal primaries across the country to elect party flagbearers for various political positions.

According to the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, voting began at 10:00 a.m. in most regions. However, in the Karamoja sub-region, voting started earlier—from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.—due to unique weather conditions in the area.

The process started with the reading of names of registered voters between 10:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., followed by voting from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Voters cast their ballots by lining up behind the posters or representatives of their preferred candidates. Declaration of results is expected before 4:00 p.m.

Security has been tightened in various districts to ensure that the process remains peaceful and orderly.

Early results have started coming in from several constituencies. Among the first declared winners is Nyamutora Phina, who secured victory in her race. More results are expected throughout the day as counting and verification continue in different parts of the country.

The NRM primaries are a critical step in determining the party’s candidates ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
