Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment in London, President Bola Tinubu confirmed on Sunday.

A former military ruler turned democratically elected leader, Buhari served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023. He was known for his firm stance on security, anti-corruption, and efforts to diversify the economy. His leadership left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s political landscape — both celebrated and debated.

Born in Daura in 1942, Buhari was a symbol of discipline and persistence, rising from military service to become the first opposition candidate to win a Nigerian presidential election.

President Tinubu has ordered national flags flown at half-mast and sent Vice President Kashim Shettima to London to accompany Buhari’s body home.

Buhari is remembered as a quiet but resolute figure whose life was deeply tied to Nigeria’s post-independence journey.
