Lightning kills 13 children at refugee camp in Uganda’s West Nile region

Palabek refugee camp is home to more than 80,000 people

Arua, November 3 — Lighting has killed 13 children and one adult at Palabek refugee camp in Uganda’s West Nile region.

The victims were attending a church service on Saturday evening when the lightning struck. Another 34 people were injured.

The area has of late been receiving heavy rains with thunder and lightning.

Uganda Police Spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, said that the adult killed was a 21 years old.

Palabek Refugee Settlement is home to more than 80,000 refugees and asylum seekers from neighbouring South Sudan.

Four years ago, lightning killed 10 children in Arua city, north-western Uganda.

The children were struck while taking a break from a game of football.
