Mathias Mpuuga emerged as a prominent figure in Ugandan politics and beyond. A seasoned politician with a background in law and education, Mpuuga’s unassuming appearance gives a false impression of his strong-willed nature.
Formerly a member of the Democratic Party (DP), Mpuuga’s political journey took a new turn in 2020 when he joined the National Unity Platform (NUP) led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. Alongside 10 other DP Bloc members these include Joseph Ssewungu, Medard Ssegona, Betty Nambooze, Moses Kasibante, Muwanga Kivumbi, Allan Ssewanyana, Ssempala Kigozi, Ssentongo Robinah, Veronica Namaganda and Florence Namayanja. Mpuuga made the strategic move to align with NUP in preparation for the 2021 elections.
Currently holding the position of Deputy President of the NUP Party for the Buganda region, Mpuuga’s commitment to his political career is evident in his diverse experience. He was the Managing Director of Datamine Technical Business School, 2003-2011, Managing Director of Liberal Consult Ltd 2001-2004, Minister for Youth , Buganda Kingdom 2008-2010, Teacher, Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga 1998-2003, Director Masaka Town College, 2000-2002, Youth Chairperson Masaka District Local Government 2000-2011, also a member of University Council Mutesa 1 Royal University 2010 to date. Mpuuga has left a mark in different spheres of society.
Born on October 12, 1975 to the late Vicent Nsamba and Gertrude Nsamba, in Masaka District, Mpuuga’s educational journey led him through various institutions including Makerere University, where he pursued degrees in Education and Law. His involvement in politics dates back to his university days when he joined the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), a pivotal moment that shaped his political trajectory.
Mpuuga’s passion for politics was further fuelled by his engagement in the Walk-to-Work campaign in 2011, which showcased his leadership skills and unwavering commitment to advocating for change. Over the years, he has been a vocal advocate for transparency and accountability in governance, evident in his decision to reject the parliamentary allocation of funds meant to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite being a member of the DP bloc, Mpuuga has faced challenges within his party, particularly disapproving of their leadership approach. His bold stance on returning funds allocated to MPs demonstrates his unwavering principles and ethical standards.
