The crisis began in November 2024, when President Isaac Ssemakadde and Vice President Anthony Asiimwe were expelled from the ULS council over allegations of gross misconduct. However, the expulsion has been disputed, with Ssemakadde’s supporters arguing that the decision was illegitimate and that he and Asiimwe are still in charge.
The crisis has escalated into a full-blown battle, with Ssemakadde filing a petition in the High Court to halt a private prosecution against him. The prosecution was authorized by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court, and Ssemakadde’s lawyers argue that the court process is being abused. Furthermore, the ULS has suspended its Secretary General, Phillip Munaabi, and council member Geoffrey Turyamusiima over allegations of attempting to overthrow Ssemakadde’s leadership. This move has been seen as an attempt to consolidate power and silence dissenting voices within the ULS.
